
Drexel Women Win Varsity Four at the Bergen Cup Regatta

Philadelphia, Pa. – The Drexel women recorded a first-place finish in the varsity four contest, besting Saint Joseph's and Temple with a 7:44.19 final clocking Saturday afternoon on the Schuylkill. The varsity eight women who won the Kerr Cup last weekend on the Schuylkill came up just short of winning the Kelly Cup by placing second in 6:15.89. Saint Joseph's took the top honors, stopping the clock with a 6:07.35.
The Drexel men's varsity eight crew defeated Saint Joseph's, La Salle and Temple to win the Bergen Cup Regatta Saturday afternoon. The Drexel men clocked 5:43.12 in the varsity eight race to edge Saint Joseph's (5:43.76) and La Salle (5:56.10) to win the Bergen Cup which serves as the championship regatta for the Philadelphia Dad Vail schools. Temple's varsity eight crossed the line in 5:33.60 but was disqualified for a lane violation.
The men's varsity eight crew was led by seniors Terry Mascitelli and Doug Allcorn. Juniors Alan Fody, Austin Barolin, Danielle Bowers, Mike Krantz, and Vince Zapisek teamed up with sophomore Timothy Bohinski, and freshman Chris Hillenbrand to round out the varsity eight boat.
The Drexel men also recorded a third-place finish in the junior varsity eight race, finishing in 5:36.63 for 1,850 meters. The crew of Ross Shacklett, Jon Klenk, Eric Shoyer, Ryan Dorr, Michael Niles, Michael Gartland, Michael Sausa, Jon Holland, and Andrew Preston finished ahead of Saint Joseph's crew that posted a 5:44.19 finish time.
The Drexel crew returns for its final competition on the Schuylkill at the Dad Vail Regatta, which begins Friday, May 11.
